Booking choice: The Neckar sightseeing cruise, 50 minutes. Book this Tour details
The Heidelberger Schlossbeleuchtung is the city's oldest show. The castle is lit in red bengal light so that, for a quarter of an hour, it looks the way it did when the French set fire to it. Then fireworks rise from the Old Bridge over the Neckar. It is free to watch, it draws huge crowds, and it happens on a handful of Saturdays between early summer and September.
Heidelberg Marketing has published the first two dates for 2027. This post gathers them with the timings, the history behind the red light, the viewing spots and the transport advice, and says plainly what the official page does not cover.
The quick answer
The 2027 castle illuminations published so far are Saturday 10 July and Saturday 4 September 2027. In 2026 there were two, on 11 July and 5 September. At around 22:15 the castle is lit red and the fireworks follow, the whole display lasting about 15 minutes. The Old Bridge closes to traffic from 16:00, the best free view is from the Nepomuk terrace at its northern end, and the organisers ask you to come by public transport.
What are the Heidelberg Castle illumination dates in 2027?
Saturday 10 July and Saturday 4 September 2027 are confirmed on the Heidelberg Marketing page. No other 2027 date has been published as of this post.
The official event page at heidelberg-marketing.de lists exactly two dates for 2027. The event has traditionally run on up to three Saturdays a year, in June, July and September, but 2026 had two as well: Heidelberg24 reported the first on 11 July 2026 and the second announced for 5 September 2026. If a June 2027 night is added, it will appear on that page first; we will add it here when it does.
Plan around the published dates, not the pattern. Hotels in the Old Town fill for these weekends.
| Year | Dates | Status |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 | 11 July and 5 September | Past; reported by Heidelberg24 |
| 2027 | 10 July | Published by Heidelberg Marketing |
| 2027 | 4 September | Published by Heidelberg Marketing |
| 2027 | A June date | Not published as of October 2026 |
What time does the castle illumination start, and how long does it last?
Around 22:15 the castle is lit in red, the fireworks over the Neckar follow, and the display runs about 15 minutes.
The official page puts it simply: at around 22:15 Heidelberg Castle is "bathed in a dramatic red light", and the event "begins at 10:15 p.m. and lasts approximately 15 minutes". Fifteen minutes is short. Get to your spot early. The banks and the bridge approaches fill long before the lights go out, and nobody wants to watch the finale from behind a lamp post.
The city has run an early-evening programme in the Old Town in past years. In 2026, Heidelberg24 noted a musical fireworks display by the Church of the Holy Spirit from 18:15 on the first night. Whether 2027 repeats it is up to the organisers; the official page for 2027 lists the castle illumination and fireworks only.

Why is Heidelberg Castle lit red with fireworks?
The red light recalls the burning of the castle and town by French troops in 1689 and 1693. The fireworks recall 1613, when Friedrich V welcomed his bride Elizabeth Stuart with a display.
Two stories are told in one show. The red glow stands for the War of the Palatine Succession, when the troops of Louis XIV set fire to the castle on 2 March 1689 and came back in May 1693 to blow up the towers that had survived. The split Powder Tower you can see from the garden still lies as they left it. The history guide tells the whole chain of events, lightning strike included.
The fireworks are the happy half. In 1613 Elector Friedrich V brought his new wife, Elizabeth Stuart, daughter of James I of England, home to Heidelberg and greeted her with fireworks. He later built her the Elizabeth Gate in the garden, which legend says went up in a single night. Heidelberg Marketing names both events as the reason for the modern illumination.

Where is the best place to watch the Heidelberg Castle illumination?
The Nepomuk terrace at the northern end of the Old Bridge is the spot the organisers recommend. The Neckar banks, the bridge itself and the river are the alternatives.
Heidelberg Marketing names the Nepomuk Terrace at the northern end of the Old Bridge as the place with an especially good view of the fireworks, with food, drink and music on hand and no table reservations. The Old Bridge closes to traffic from 16:00 and becomes a standing gallery; the roads reopen from about 23:30. The north bank along the Neckarwiese and the Philosophenweg higher up give the classic postcard angle with the whole castle in frame. Heidelberg24 called the Philosophenweg the best view ahead of the 2026 nights, and it is also the steepest to reach in the dark.
Then there is the water. Boats on the Neckar sit right under the show and are a classic place to watch from. The Neckar sightseeing cruise on this site is a daytime 50-minute round trip from Neckarstaden 25, and its listing says nothing about illumination nights, so book it for the afternoon and ask the operator directly about special sailings that evening.
| Spot | What you get | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Nepomuk terrace, north end of the Old Bridge | Recommended by the organisers; food, drink, music | Packed early; no reservations |
| Old Bridge | Closest to the fireworks, closed to traffic from 16:00 | Standing room, slow to leave |
| Neckarwiese and the north bank | Space to sit; full castle in view | Further from the bridge |
| Philosophenweg | The postcard panorama | Steep climb, dark paths |
| A boat on the river | Under the fireworks | Check with the operator for that evening |
See the castle from the river in daylight, under the Old Bridge with a drink in hand. Fifty minutes, free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
Book thisHow do I get to the castle illumination by public transport?
By tram or bus into the Old Town, then on foot. The organisers strongly recommend public transport and warn that there is no parking near the event.
The official page is blunt: it "strongly recommends arriving by public transport", says there is no parking near the event area, and expects heavy traffic across the city with parking garages filling fast. From the Hauptbahnhof, buses 33 and 20 run to the Bergbahn stop by the Kornmarkt on normal days; on illumination nights expect diversions around the river, and give yourself an hour more than you think you need. In 2026 Heidelberg24 covered the rnv diversions and extra services ahead of the night, and the same coverage is likely in 2027.
Leaving is the hard part. A full bridgehead does not clear quickly. Walk a stop or two away from the river before boarding anything, or linger for a drink and let the crowd thin.
Is Heidelberg Castle open on illumination nights?
The official event page does not say, and the castle's standard hours end at 18:00. Treat the illumination as something you watch from below, not from inside.
Heidelberg Marketing describes the Schlossbeleuchtung as a light display seen from the city, and its page says nothing about the castle courtyard or grounds being open that evening. The castle's own visitor information gives daily hours of 09:00 to 18:00 with last admission at 17:30, and lists no exception for these Saturdays. The garden terraces are open in daylight, which in July runs late into the evening, but we have found no official word that they stay open for the show, so do not plan on it.
Our advice: see the castle in the daytime, on a tour or on your own, and watch it burn from the bridge at night. The visiting guide has the daytime plan, and the tour comparison sorts out which guided walk fits a Saturday afternoon before the illumination.

Fifty minutes on the Neckar with the castle above you and a drink included, the afternoon before the castle turns red.
