Heidelberg Castle and Old Town from Frankfurt

About this experience

ETS Touristik has run day trips out of Frankfurt for years, and this is the half-day version: Heidelberg and back in about five and a half hours. You meet on the pavement at Wiesenhüttenplatz 38, by the Hotel Le Meridien a short walk from the Hauptbahnhof. The listing is firm that you wait outside, not in the hotel lobby. The drive is about an hour. The castle comes first: the courtyard, the Renaissance facades of the Friedrichsbau and Ottheinrichsbau, the terrace with the Old Town below, and the cellar with the Great Tun, with admission to the castle and the barrel included.

Then a walking tour of the Old Town: the Karlstor at the eastern gate, the Old Bridge, the House of the Knights opposite the Church of the Holy Spirit, and free time before the drive back. The listing states a minimum of four passengers for the tour to run and does not give a maximum; one guest in May wrote of six people in a minivan, but the vehicle is listed as van or bus, so expect either. It is not suitable for wheelchair users.

What is not in it: the castle's interior tour, which is a supplement sold at the castle, and the funicular is not named in the listing, so expect to be driven to the hill and walked in. Vehicle access is via Neue Schlossstrasse while the Graimbergweg is closed for works, likely until the end of 2026. For a smaller vehicle on the same route from the same spot, see the small-group van for seven. For the train instead, our Frankfurt guide has the route.

Tips before you book

  • Wiesenhüttenplatz is a five-minute walk south of the Hauptbahnhof. Give yourself ten more: the listing says the tour leaves promptly.
  • Eat before you leave or plan on the free time. Food and drink are not included and the castle part comes first.
  • The castle's interior tour runs hourly in English in summer, about an hour long. With a group schedule you will not fit it in; come back by train another day if the rooms matter to you.
  • Comfortable shoes. The courtyard is cobbled, the cellar is down stairs and the Old Town walk adds another hour on your feet.
  • Free cancellation runs to 24 hours before. If the weather forecast turns, you can move the date without losing anything.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the Frankfurt to Heidelberg Castle tour?

About five and a half hours door to door according to the listing, with roughly an hour each way on the road and the rest split between the castle, the Old Town walk and free time.

Is the castle ticket included?

Yes. The listing includes admission to the castle and to the Great Tun. The castle's guided tour of the interiors is a separate supplement sold at the castle and is not part of this trip.

What does the minimum of four passengers mean?

The listing states that the tour needs at least four passengers to run. It does not say what happens if fewer book, so a couple travelling in a quiet month should ask the operator through the booking page before relying on the date.

Is there hotel pickup?

No. The listing names one meeting point, the pavement outside the Hotel Le Meridien at Wiesenhüttenplatz 38 near Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof. The small-group tour from the same square offers hotel pickup by email arrangement.
