Little Big Tours · Karlsplatz, Old Town

Summit first, then the castle on foot

A van from Karlsplatz takes you up to the Königstuhl summit for the panorama, then you ride the historic wooden funicular down to the castle for the courtyard, the garden, the Great Tun and the Apothecary Museum, and finish with a guided walk through the Old Town. Pick it for the order: seeing the whole Neckar valley from above makes the castle below it make sense.

Königstuhl Panorama, Castle and Old Town

About this experience

Most castle tours go up the lower funicular and come back the same way. This one reverses the hill. A van collects you at the Sebastian-Münster fountain on Karlsplatz, right below the castle, and drives up to the Königstuhl, the hill the castle sits on, with its summit station at over 550 metres. From the top you see the Neckar valley, the Rhine plain and on a clear day the hills beyond. Then the historic upper funicular, wooden cars from 1907, every twenty minutes, takes you down to Molkenkur, and the lower line carries on to the Schloss station. The upper line is normally a separate ticket; here it is in the tour.

At the castle the listing covers the courtyard and the garden, the Great Tun cellar and the German Apothecary Museum, with a guide for the story of the electors. The interiors are not included; the furnished rooms are on the castle's own guided tour, a supplement sold at the cash desk. Then you walk down into the Old Town for the Church of the Holy Spirit, the Old Bridge and the Zeughaus-Marstall, the old arsenal by the river. Bottled water is included. Four and a half hours in all.

The restrictions are the strictest of any tour here, and they come from the listing: not suitable for children under 12, for people with mobility impairments or heart problems, or for wheelchair users; you should be sure-footed; it runs in any weather; no pets and no large bags. Guests in July wrote of a party of four with two guides, so the groups are small. For a gentler two hours on the same hill, the Discover Heidelberg Castle walk skips the summit.

  • You are fit, sure-footed and happy to be out in any weather for four and a half hours

Skip it if

  • You are travelling with children under 12: the listing excludes them

Tips before you book

  • Pack for the summit. The Königstuhl is several degrees cooler than the Old Town and the tour runs in any weather, so bring a layer and something waterproof.
  • Leave the big bag at the hotel. The listing does not allow large bags in the van, and the funicular cars are small.
  • Pick a clear morning if you can move the date; the panorama is the point. Free cancellation runs to 24 hours before.
  • Carry a water bottle anyway. One is included, but four and a half hours on foot and on hills uses more.
  • The funiculars are due to be suspended from 4 October 2027 to 7 April 2028 for bridge works. Ask the operator how the tour runs then; our note on the closure has what is known.
