Booking choice: The Discover Heidelberg Castle guided walk, 2 hours. Book this Tour details
Winter is the quiet season at Heidelberg Castle, and a good one. The coach groups thin out, the terrace view is sharper in cold air, and the Old Town below runs its Christmas market from late November into the New Year. The catch is a set of date-specific changes: shorter hours on 24 and 31 December, a full closure on Christmas Day, a late start on 1 January, a thinner English tour timetable and a road closure on the hill.
Everything below comes from the castle's own visitor information and the city's event pages, as published in early October 2026. Check them again the week you travel.
The quick answer
The courtyard, Great Terrace and Great Tun are open daily from 09:00 to 18:00 all winter, last admission 17:30. On 24 and 31 December the castle closes at 14:00, on 25 December it is closed, and on 1 January it opens at 11:00. From 2 November the English interior tours run four times a day on weekdays. The Graimbergweg road is closed for works until about the end of 2026, and the Heidelberg Christmas Market runs from 23 November to 22 December 2026.
What are Heidelberg Castle's opening hours in winter?
Daily from 09:00 to 18:00, holidays included, with last admission at 17:30. The winter hours match the summer ones; the funicular and the museum are what shift.
The castle's visitor information gives one set of hours for the courtyard, the Altan (Great Terrace) and the Great Tun all year round: 09:00 to 18:00, last admission 17:30, and the cash desk until 17:15. In December that means the last hour is in the dark, which is no bad thing on the terrace when the Old Town lights come on.
The German Apothecary Museum keeps its 10:00 to 18:00 hours until 5 January, then switches on 6 January to 10:00 to 17:30 with last entry at 17:10, until the end of March. The palace garden stays free and open in daylight hours, which in midwinter is not long. The lower funicular runs from 09:00 in the morning; in winter the last car down leaves earlier than in summer, around 17:40, so check the timetable on bergbahn-heidelberg.de before you linger.
| Part of the visit | Winter hours 2026-27 | Note |

| Palace garden and Elizabeth Gate | Daylight hours | Free |
| Lower funicular | From 09:00; last car down about 17:40 in winter | Check the timetable |
Is Heidelberg Castle open at Christmas and New Year?
Open on every day but one. 24 and 31 December are short days to 14:00, 25 December is closed, and 1 January opens late at 11:00.
These are the dates that catch people out. On Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve the courtyard, terrace and Tun close at 14:00 with last admission at 13:30, and the Apothecary Museum closes at 13:30. Christmas Day the whole castle is shut. On New Year's Day the castle opens at 11:00 and the museum at 12:00, both until 18:00. The English interior tours follow suit: 11:15 and 12:15 on 24 and 31 December, none on 25 December.
Boxing Day, 26 December, is a public holiday in Germany and the castle runs normal hours. Expect it busier than an ordinary weekday, because everyone with visiting family has the same idea. Go on the 27th or 28th instead if you can.
| Date | Courtyard, terrace and Tun | Apothecary Museum | English interior tours |
|---|---|---|---|
| 24 December 2026 | 09:00 to 14:00, last admission 13:30 | 10:00 to 13:30 | 11:15 and 12:15 |

When are the English guided tours of the castle interiors in winter?
From 2 November to 26 March, Monday to Friday at 11:15, 12:15, 14:15 and 15:15, and hourly from 11:15 to 15:15 at weekends and on holidays.
The castle's own tour is the way to see inside the buildings: the furnished rooms of the Friedrichsbau and the chapel, about an hour with a castle guide. Through the summer the English tours run hourly. From 2 November the weekday timetable drops to four departures, with a gap at 13:15, and the weekend tours start an hour later than in summer. German tours run on the hour. The tour is a supplement to the castle ticket, bought at the cash desk; it is not sold online, and no tour on this site includes it.
In practice that means arriving before 11:00 on a weekday if you want the first English tour, or planning the Tun and the museum around the 14:15. The ticket guide explains what the castle ticket covers and what the interior tour adds.
| Period | English tours, Monday to Friday | English tours, weekends and holidays |
|---|---|---|
| 28 March to 1 November | Hourly 11:15 to 16:15 | Hourly 10:15 to 16:15 |
| 2 November to 26 March | 11:15, 12:15, 14:15, 15:15 | Hourly 11:15 to 15:15 |
| 24 and 31 December | 11:15 and 12:15 | 11:15 and 12:15 |
| 25 December | None | None |
The guided walk runs through the winter with the castle ticket and the funicular ride included; the listing states that the interiors are not part of it.
Book thisAre there roadworks or closures at Heidelberg Castle this winter?
Yes, two to know about. The Graimbergweg up to the castle is closed for construction until about the end of 2026, and the castle posted a maintenance notice for the gate tower in early October.
The Graimbergweg, the road that winds up from the Old Town to the castle, has been closed for construction since 17 June 2026, and the castle expects the closure to last until around the end of the year. Drivers reach the castle via the Neue Schlossstrasse instead and leave via the Hausackerweg or the Molkenkurweg. Parking up there is tight at the best of times; in winter, with the works, leave the car in town and take the funicular from the Kornmarkt.
The second notice is minor and probably over by the time you read this: between 5 and 8 October 2026 the castle warned of possible delays at the gate tower from 15:00 because of maintenance. We mention it because it shows the pattern. The castle posts short-notice works on its visitor information page, and a glance there the morning you go takes thirty seconds. The funicular itself also stops for a safety inspection most years in late winter; our post on the 2027-28 suspension explains the pattern.

What can I see at Heidelberg Castle when it rains or snows?
The Great Tun cellar, the German Apothecary Museum and the castle's interior tour are all under cover. The courtyard and the terrace are not, and the cobbles get slippery.
A wet day at the castle is better than it sounds, because two of the three ticketed indoor attractions are big. The Tun cellar is a vaulted hall with a staircase onto the barrel; the Apothecary Museum fills the ground floor and cellar of the Ottheinrichsbau and the Apothecary Tower with historic pharmacy interiors, enough for an hour. Add the castle's own interior tour and you have two to three hours under a roof. The guided walks sold online are mostly outdoors, so take a hood rather than an umbrella, which the wind on the terrace will turn inside out.
Snow does not stay long in Heidelberg, but when it comes the courtyard is at its best and the Burgweg is at its worst. Ride the funicular up and down on those days. Weekdays in January and February are the emptiest of the year; a Tuesday morning after the Christmas market closes may give you the Great Terrace alone.

A two-hour guided walk with the castle ticket, the funicular and the Apothecary Museum included, so the indoor parts are already in hand on a wet day.
Book this Tour detailsWhen is the Heidelberg Christmas Market 2026, and is it near the castle?
From 23 November to 22 December 2026, on six squares in the Old Town directly below the castle. The Kornmarkt, where the funicular starts, hosts the Winter Woodland until 1 January 2027.
Heidelberg Marketing gives the dates: the Christmas market runs from 23 November to 22 December 2026 across Bismarckplatz, the Anatomiegarten, Universitätsplatz, Marktplatz, the Kornmarkt and Karlsplatz. Marktplatz has the wooden village around the Hercules fountain with a rotating Perkeo on a barrel, a nod to the jester in the Tun cellar above. The Kornmarkt becomes the "Winter Woodland", more than a hundred lit fir trees and white tents, and stays open until 1 January 2027. The ice rink on Karlsplatz, with the castle in view, runs to 6 January 2027.
The geography works in your favour. The funicular valley station and the Burgweg both start at the Kornmarkt, so the natural winter day is castle first, while the light lasts, then down into the market as the lanterns come on. The sightseeing bus and castle tour ends with the funicular down to the Old Town, which drops you in the middle of it; the listing names German as the tour language. The visiting guide has the hour-by-hour plan for the castle itself.
